Domino’s Launches Nationwide E-Bike Delivery Program

Delivering pizzas in large, gas-powered vehicles has long been the standard in many areas across the country, but it’s far from efficient. In many of these locations, there’s a more eco-friendly and practical option for short deliveries of just a mile or two: e-bikes.

Domino’s tested the use of e-bikes for deliveries earlier this year in cities like Houston, Miami, and New York, reporting improved delivery times, better customer satisfaction, and enhanced employee happiness.

Now, the company is moving beyond the pilot program phase. E-bikes will be made available to franchises nationwide, and several Domino’s corporate stores are set to adopt them later this year.

Customized E-Bikes by Rad Power Bikes

The e-bikes, developed in collaboration with Rad Power Bikes, are specially modified versions of the RadCity Step-Thru model. The partnership began a few years ago with a single franchise owner in Seattle, where Rad Power Bikes is headquartered.

Each e-bike is equipped with small assist motors, allowing them to reach speeds of up to 20 mph and cover a range of 25 to 40 miles on a single charge. The bikes are outfitted with insulated soft-sided cargo packs, capable of holding up to 12 large pizzas per trip.

In Seattle, the e-bikes proved to be a game-changer by eliminating parking and traffic issues, ultimately speeding up deliveries. Domino’s also noted labor benefits, as they were able to hire delivery personnel who didn’t require a driver’s license or vehicle.

Exploring Other Delivery Innovations

E-bikes are just one of the innovative delivery methods Domino’s has explored. In Miami, the company has tested self-driving Ford vehicles for deliveries. Additionally, Domino’s is partnering with autonomous-vehicle startup Nuro in Houston, rolling out a pilot program featuring a self-driving, specially designed pizza delivery vehicle later this year.
